Abstract:
Food rich in antioxidants plays an essential role in the prevention of diseases, The antioxidant activities and Ascorbic acid (vitamin c) contents of four different types of Libyan honey(Sedr,Zater,Rabee and Hanon).
Percentage antioxidant activities of diluted honey samples were assayed in vitro by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. Using ascorbic acid as +ve control the antioxidant activity of diluted honey samples increased with increasing the levels (100µL,200µL and 300µL) of honey samples.
The total antioxidant activities of diluted samples varied from 0.36% to 15.05% inhibition.
The Sedr honey had the highest antioxidant activity and Ascorbic acid content. The present study confirms that Libyan honey contains significant source of antioxidants that may have therapeutic potential
